online education?
im looking to go back to school but i work 12 hour shifts and cant go in person so im considering an online ba or as. im sure this questions been asked a thousand times but is it really worth it and do you get a quality education? it’s gotta cost an arm and a leg though right? if anyone has taken any online courses, how long, typicaly for a ba or as degree with limited time per week?
I don’t know how much college you have at this point. Assuming you are in the US, many junior colleges offer on-line courses. I took a few. I only had to go to the campus to take my final and turn in my homework.
The cost isn’t much, but it was time consuming. I’d recommend that you start slow and knock off a few units a semester, and work up from there if you feel you can handle the load.
Once you graduate from junior college, see if you can work the same deal out getting the rest of your units from a 4 year school.
It will be tough if you are already working 12 hr shifts.
Good luck to you.

Cyber Connections in Online College Courses
$90.48 The role and face of the college student has drastically changed with many traditional college students (18-22 year olds) facing extraordinary costs of college tuition, having to work in addition to attending school, and the non-traditional adult learner returning to school has left universities and colleges with little physical space for classes and a need to address the new learners. Online education offers an opportunity for working students to attend college while addressing work and other responsibilities. The problem is that online education is new to not only students, but also faculty teaching in these areas. One areas is the use of the communication tools used in online courses such as e-mail, instant messaging, chat rooms, etc. Another is one may assume that younger students have an advantage over adults using communications tools. Students sometimes feel the isolation as well as the faculty member of being disconnected in an online course. This research examined how students used communication tools to foster social communications in order to connect to one another in a social learning environment that provided a richer context for a learning community to evolve during the semester. Does gender affect the way students use communication tools to connect using social communications? Does age have an effect on the way that students use communication tools using social communications? The book addresses faculty, administrators, and distance education professionals in community colleges, four-year colleges, and universities and can provide insight to those organizations using online education in training and continuing education courses. |

Achievement, Attitude, and Learning Style in Online Courses
$83.11 This monograph discusses a study conducted with a sample of graduate education students enrolled in online and in-class courses. The study examines the differences in achievement among students enrolled in similar courses, delivered through competing instructional modalities: online and in-class. These students' attitudes toward computer-based learning and their learning-style preferences were examined to note existing relationships among the variables as they relate to overall performance in respective courses. Significant findings revealed that certain learning-style preferences correspond to greater satisfaction and improved performance in online courses, which provides some explanation as to why individuals may be more successful than others in online courses. The study provides implications for improved practice in customizing online and in-class courses to meet students' needs. It is also noted that these findings, when applied, may help to raise student awareness of their own learning styles, increase retention at various levels of higher- education, and enhance the delivery of advisement based on learning-style assessment. |

Understanding Participation in Online Courses
$89.81 Applying the three types of interaction and the analytical model help teaching and learning become more effective. When the instructor applied the analytical model: frequency of interaction, patterns of online interaction, the level of the learner- instructor interaction in online course increased. Furthermore, social cues encouraged learner- instructor interaction when the instructor allowed students to build rapport with their instructor and classmates in the first week of the class. When the instructor led online interaction by using the frequency of interaction and patterns of online interaction from the analytical model,it also promoted the learner-learner interaction. Moreover, using social cues in the beginning of the online course assisted students in becoming familiar with their classmates. As a result, students felt more comfortable sharing information with their fellow classmates. When instructor used cognitive and metacognitive approaches in the assignments,it assisted students to think critically and develop skills and knowledge that they can use outside of the classroom. |

Quality Online Instruction
$65.98 Distance education has been growing considerably in higher education and with the growth of students taking online courses, there has been rising concern about the quality of online instruction. Evidence of the concern for quality of instruction is seen through indicators including college rankings, media ratings, accreditation criteria, publications of higher education associations, and state laws that mandate assessment at universities. This book discusses the history of distance education, the demand for quality, growth of online courses, and a research study that addresses the quality of online instruction. Are online courses percieved to be of high quality? Do instructors and students in the same class percieve the quality the same or different? The book is addressed to professionals in Higher Education like Faculty Members, Deans, Department Chairs and Administrators. It is also directed towards researchers in distance education and online instruction. |
