How can I have help my 10 year old son to lessen the pressure he puts on himself for school work?

My son puts an enormous amount of pressure on himself where schoolwork is concerned. He feels he has to be perfect. Example: it’s the middle of summer and I had him do math worksheets to keep his skills fresh for school. When I checked them he missed four. He was in tears. When I asked why he said he didn’t want to get a parent signature (a parent signature means he failed the test) and every thing that is on paper is a test. He isn’t in school. Why would he think he would get a parent signature? I’m at a loss. He had trouble at the end of third grade with this. He was crying almost daily in class. He was having some emotional issues. He was born with Sensory Integration Dysfunction, which makes him over sensity anyway. But he’s just recently developed these emotional problems. I don’t know how to help him. Can you help me?

Let him know that the things that he misses aren’t signs of failure; they are illustrations of what he can improve. Tell him that nobody is perfect and that success can come without perfection.

I’m sure that you do this already, but let him know that, no matter how he does in school, you love him and think that he is a good person. Be honest.
