Where can I find a decent-sized list of the “main works” an English major should have read?

I’m an English major and am trying to get more prepared, but many times, “famous” poets and novelists and playwrights are brought up in conversation that I’ve heard nothing of.

As a second-year English major, I’ve found that everyone knows about different novels, and that professors usually don’t care what you’ve read, as long as you’ve read some great novels (which I assume you have). Also, as you take more and more English classes, you’ll find yourself accumulating a ton of knowledge on literature, which will extend beyond what you’ve learned in class (and you won’t even know how it happened!).

I’m a heavy reader, and entering college I thought I’d know more than everyone–I don’t, I know the same amount as they do, just different works of literature. There is a certain focus on Shakespeare at my university, since we’re a ten-minute walk from the famous Oregon Shakespeare Festival (awesomeeee).

So it really doesn’t matter exactly what you read, but if you want to prepare, I’d recommend reading all the classics you can get your hands on. Professors also seem to admire some knowledge of plays and poems, so I’d definitely recommend checking some out–things like The Crucible and The Glass Menagerie are good plays, and poetry such as Walt Whitman, Pablo Neruda, and more modern former poet laureates are great too.

I did find a link from Time magazine that listed what they think to be the 100 best books, which I have below. It appears to have a bunch of great literature on there, and I think you’ll find it’ll help you out a lot!
