A classmate’s e-mail indicates that he is encountering trouble understanding the concepts of rotation, translation, reflection, and rotational symmetry. How would you explain these concepts to your classmate? What examples could you provide in everyday life?

A rotation is a transformation like a rotation of a wheel. It can be positive (counterclockwise) or negative (clockwise).

A translation is a transformation that glides a point (or points) the same distance in the same direction.

A reflection is transformation that reflects a point (or line or figure) across a specified line (or figure); most commonly, a point or figure is relected across the x- or y-axis or across the line y = x.

Rotational symmetry means that a figure is rotated (clockwise or counterclockwise) and still looks the same. For example, when rotated 1/2 a turn, the letters I, N, X, S, Z and O look the same, so it can be said that they have rotational symmetry. Also, when a square is rotated 1/4 a turn, it looks the same. All letters, when rotated a full turn have rotational symmetry.
