Logic question; Math?
I am working on a problem, and I am trying to find out where I am missing this one… I can’t find a reasonable explanation and this is a textbook without a solutions manual, and I am not doing this for any class that I am taking, and so lack an instructor at the moment…
It is an elementary level logic problem, I think that I am trying to distribute the symbol across the parenthesis, and this is causing me trouble.
Here it is:
Let p be 1+1=2
Let q be 2+1=8
(tau) (~(~p (and) ~q)) = False, this is what I got, but apparently this is untrue.
Where (tau) represents “the truth value”
So, hmmmm, anyone know where I went wrong and what is right about the right way?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
p is true and q is false, so
(tau) (~(~p (and) ~q))
= ~(~T (and) ~F)
= ~(F (and) T))
= ~F
= T

The Math Problems Notebook
$38.48 The Math Problems Notebook is a collection of nontrivial, unconventional problems requiring deep insight and imagination reminiscent of those discussed at Sunday Math Circles. These circles have become a place for disseminating beautiful mathematics at an elementary level for college students who have a common passion for mathematics. The problems cover many topics, including number theory, algebra, combinatorics, geometry and analysis, of varying levels of difficulty. The presentation of each topic begins with simple exercises and follows with more difficult problems, challenging enough even for the experienced problem solver. The easier problems focus on basic methods and tools, while the more advanced problems develop problem-solving techniques, intuition and promote further research. Undergraduates and teachers of advanced mathematics, as well as the casual mathematician will mutually enjoy The Math Problems Notebook. |

FAMOUS PROBLEMS OF ELEMENTARY GEOMETRY
$19.98 "This short book, first published in 1897, addresses three geometry puzzles that have been passed down from ancient times. Written for high school students, this book aims to show a younger audience why math should matter and to make the problems found in math intriguing. Klein presents for his readers an investigation of the possibility or impossibility of finding solutions for the following problems in light of mathematics available to him: ¿ duplication of the cube ¿ trisection of an angle ¿ quadrature of the circle Mathematicians and students of the history of math will find this an intriguing work. German mathematician FELIX KLEIN (1849¿1925), a great teacher and scientific thinker, significantly advanced the field of mathematical physics and made a number of profound discoveries in the field of geometry. His published works include Elementary Mathematics from an Advanced Standpoint: Arithmetic, Algebra, Analysis and Elementary Mathematics from an Advanced Standpoint: Geometry." |

It's Elementary! 275 Math Word Problems (book 2)
$4.21 Based on strategies the author uses in her own classroom, this new series teaches students a reliable method for analyzing and solving math word problems. The book covers each of the 4 operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The 275 word problems in Book 2 of Its Elementary! give students a 4-step process for problem-solving. The acronym TINS stands for Thought, Information, Number Sentence, and Solution Sentence. (NOTE: Book 2 is recommended for Grade 4.)At the beginning of each section, the TINS method is described and an example problem appears, followed by the following components:1. Try It Out: 10 easy problems, the first 5 of which include illustrations2. On Your Own: 10 slightly more difficult problems3. Take the Challenge: 20 problems that range in difficulty from easy to challenging4. Write Your Own I: An example problem followed by 3 problems that provide information which students then use to write their own word problems5. Write Your Own II: 5 problems that ask students to write their own word problems6. Explain: An example problem followed by 2 word problems that students solve and then write an explanation describing their problem-solving strategyA new topic in Book 2 is Bar Graphs, Picture Graphs, and Charts. Two Mixed Practice sections of 20 problems appear in the book. The first is Addition/Subtraction Mixed Practice. The second is Multiplication/Division Mixed Practice. A Final Mixed Review has 22 problems and covers all 4 operations. |
