what is taught in elementary school special ed?
i was just wondering what children with special needs are being taught? is there a special curriculum that is followed? are they taught math, science, history or what? life skills?
It all depends on the individual student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP).
This is THE legal doccument which draws up what specific special education services an eligible student will receive and how those services are to be provided/by whom.
Only students eligible to be/are already enrolled in special education services have an IEP. The general student population do not recieve IEP’s.
As per the name of this document, the education needs of that elgible student are supposed to be individually tailored to their unique individual disabilit(ies) AND ability.
The IEP legally is reviewed and/or updated annually to recognize the skills which the student effectively mastered and would no longer need to work on in the special education program. It also occurs whenever the committee (including the parents) determines there is a specific need for an earlier conference/review.
The student themselves is supposed to be educated in the Least Restrictive Environment possible. The LRE effectively accomodates their disabilities while providing a Free Appropriate Public Education (LRE).
