Do you think that teachers are highly critical of shy and quiet students?

I tutor a student who is very quiet (she’s in 5th grade) and she says the teacher criticizes her for being quiet more harshly than the students in her class in front of her classmates. She is a very good student (get A’s and B’s) but the only subject she has trouble in is math. I think that the teacher is being rude and insensitive and she’s not helping this young girl by criticizing her; I think it is making her more shy. She don’t associate with her classmates because they ridicule her and one female student tried to give her a piece of candy and this student put it in a mice trap and wrap it up and gave it to her like it was fresh (she said three boys told her this). The teacher did not believe her at all. When she gets older, I don’t think she will trust women very well. What do you think?

I think some teachers be highly critical of shy and quiet students, but not all. I have some teachers who were very nice to me, and others that weren’t so nice. I do, however, think that they will always be treated a little differently than the other students (even if it isn’t intentional) simply because they don’t talk much.

For example, a lot of teachers try to “reach out” to the shy students because they assume something is wrong with them. I’ve had one of my teachers send me down to the counselors office because I seemed “withdrawn” from my friends (I wasn’t sad or anything, so I never understood why I was there).

Or when I was younger, I always had teachers ask students to let me play with them… which is a nice effort, but I don’t want people to feel OBLIGATED to be around me.

It’s encouraged in schools to talk to the quiet people, which isn’t a BAD thing at all, but it seems like they feel… forced to talk to them because there might be something secretly wrong with them or something (if that makes sense).

Some teachers ridicule quiet kids (like my 9th grade french teacher… ugh!), but I think most are pretty good (where I live, anyway) at respecting the fact that they just aren’t as comfortable with talking to people as the other students.

As for your 5th grader, I don’t know if it will make her trust women any less, but I do think that it could make her shy away from social situations in the future (because she’s afraid of getting bullied).

And I think it’s very unfortunate that she has a teacher that criticizes her so much. I think that you should talk to her parents, and maybe have her moved to a different class.

I’m just worried that because she’s had mean teachers, she will have trouble asking questions when she needs help in the future. =(
